If only they gave points for heart

If only they gave points for heart

As we all get ready to enjoy the NFL Championship game, there are hundreds of hours of coverage of the teams that are going to play.   There are also videos of all the great plays from the past.

So were game winning touchdown throws, others huge defensive stops.  Game winning or game loosing field goals.  I love watching most of these old games, that one misses filed goal from Super Bowl 25 breaks my heart every time.

But of all these plays from all those years, there is one that I think is the best.

It doesn’t involve an offence scouring a winning touchdown, or a defense making a goal line stand.  As a matter of fact, the play had very little effect on the outcome of the game at all.

In Super Bowl 27, the Buffalo Bills were well on their way to losing the big game for the third straight year, 52-17 to the Dallas Cowboys.   With only a few minutes left in the game, the Bills had already turned the ball over 8 times.  Even with Frank Reich in a QB,  there was to be no miracle come back for the Bills.

Hoping to at least end the game with a score to make it a little less embarrassing, the Bills faced a 4 down and 6.  Instead of converting for a first down, Reich was hit and fumbled the ball.  It bounced into the hands of a 300 plus pound defensive line man and there was nothing between him, the end zone and the highest scoring Super Bowl every.

40 yards beyond the line of scrimmage, the only man with enough speed to do anything, watches as Leon Lett started running toward another Dallas touch down.   Given that Lett had a 40 yard head start and there was no way the smaller Bebee could tackle him if he caught him,  no one would have even noticed if Bebee just walked off the field.

But besides speed, Bebee had heart.

With out giving a moment hesitation, Bebee took off.

Making up all the ground he had to,  Bebee had caught up with Lett at about the 8 yard line,  but there was still nothing he could to do stop him.

Being the other part of the object lesson,  Lett took care of that.

At the 5 yard line,  Lett started to celebrate,  holding the ball out to the side.  Bebee dove for it,  knocking it away from the big Cowboy and out of the end zone.

That play made Don Bebee famous

That play has come to represent a never give up attitude that has inspired millions of people.

It’s shown the importance of always trying your hardest,  even when you know the out outcome might not go your way.

Coaches have used to  motivate their teams.

Parents have used it to encourage their kids

It will go down as one of the greatest plays in NFL history

And the Bills went on to lose 52-17.

If only they gave points for heart.
